It don't mean a thing if it ain't got some bling

That genius line has popped into my mind several times in the last month.

I've kind of caved in the bling area. I now (occasionally) wear giant silver star earrings and clunky bracelets - gifts, of course. But now I'm getting in on the buying action, too. I recently bought a used cold weather jacket that is fake fur and fake leather - and I like it. I can't imagine myself even trying the thing on a few years ago...or wearing the capris given to me decorated with silver lace and painted-on flowers.

I've thought a smidge about why people here wear such bright colors and flashy shoes and big hair. It doesn't strike me as particularly normal in the context of the rest of Europe. Maybe it's because it's a little more east than west here. Maybe it's because rap music is popular. Maybe it's because it's fun to play dress up. Whatever it is, don't tease me ("mos me nguc mua") if I get off the airplane this summer looking decidedly bling-ed to the nth degree.
