My 1st bout with coffee grounds

Sometimes Competitive Roberta manifests at the oddest times. Several of us were invited for the main meal of the day (I’ll call it lupper as it is around 3pm). First comes mineral water; next comes Turkish coffee. I, for whatever reason, wanted to prove that I had indeed adapted so well to Kosov that I could not only sip the coffee…I could flippin’ enjoy the coffee (sometimes it’s good…and sometimes it tastes like burnt sweetness). I looked over at Mr. Ken of Arizona, who was politely sipping. I raised an eyebrow and thought, “Ha! The extra week I have on the Parsons is now in my favor!” I smiled a sly grin and threw back the last bit of coffee; forgetting, of course, that Turkish coffee is made with about 2 tbsp. of grounds in the bottom of each cup. As I now had coffee grounds all over my front teeth and a immediate full body response, I had 2 options: spit and sputter or politely pour myself another glass of mineral water and gulp down my mistake like a champ. Being the acclimated culturally appropriate champ, I chose the latter…and I had heinous indigestion and a twitching left eye for the remainder of the 3-hour long visit.

you have to love those cultural experiences! when i was in romania, pig fat was a delicacy that was served to all guests. i spent two weeks in the village eating piece after piece as we visited homes there!
