neat night

My first summer here (2006), I went to several mini-concerts at coffee-bars. I prefer not to even call them concerts as there wasn’t actually singing – they were pretty girls wiggling and lip-synching (but at least to their own music). It was kind of disappointing when I realized it wasn’t live, and I’ve been to very few since.

Last night, however, I went to a concert, and it was pretty fun. And it was pretty live :) There were around 50 people – maybe more – in a little outdoor courtyard. The band played English rock with 2 or 3 Albanian songs thrown in. It was a subculture I haven’t seen too much of here (at least in a group) – guys with longish hair and black t-shirts, girls who weren’t very made up and moving their heads to the music. Yet as I looked around, I realized I recognized at least 20 people. As I did a little mingle round, I felt a kind of connection with these people. Even though I don’t know diddily about rock music or names of artists or lyrics by heart – these were my people. It felt a little bittersweet to realize that as I’m getting ready to leave.
