Right as i was about to post this at 2.30a, the elec. went off. Yesterday was the day of coffee - Turkish coffee with my teacher then again with my friend's mother-in-law, then black coffee at a friend's place of work, then a macchiato with the same friend, and then another macchiato that was ordered while i was in the restroom. I haven't built up enough tolerance yet - obviously.
Funnies in regard to the guitar: From the off-beat, wanderer (and committed) older dude – “Roberta, you played like Jimi Hendrix.” Umm…I only know how to strum...badly.
Then, while I was carrying the guitar home, my neighbor man said: “You look like Michael Jackson.” Please, oh please, tell me I didn’t understand him.
Pick up lines: “You are from another planet.” Aw shucks. “I feel you in my throat.” Uh…don’t say that. You look like Jennifer Lopez.” Not true. “You have Angelina Jolie’s lips” (…or eyes or hair, etc.). Again – not true! Although maybe it’s better than being compared to Michael Jackson… It’s weird being “O Exotic One” – especially because I don’t look that different other than being exponentially broader than any woman here. Besides, these lines are always followed by direct requests for visas to the States (or indirect requests via marriage). Be still my fluttering and palpitating heart.
Another “uh…what just happened?” moment: I was wearing a green polka-dotted shirt when I was visiting a family (green polka-dots are all the rage here, and being the trendster that I am...). The one sister asked me if she could try it on. I didn’t see any reason why she couldn’t. After she put it on, she went to the closet, dug deep for something, and threw a shirt at me. The swap was made. What? My relationship with this family is really important to me, and I didn’t want to risk saying anything stupid. So now I am the happy owner of a size teeny shirt and these sisters have already altered my green polka-dotted shirt.
I’m not even going to try to find the glimmer of truth behind these:
-“Italians got their inspiration for pizza from Albanian pite” (rational: because the two words sort of sound the same). Just for the record – there’s nothing in common with the 2 besides flour and oil.
-“Albanian is the predecessor to Latin, so all languages owe some debt of gratitude to us.”
-“Hillary Clinton for president is the key to peace in Kosovo.”
-I read these quotes in a slightly biased Serbian news source: “UNICEF has spent billions of dollars renovating mosques in Kosovo.” -the children's fund? “[…Kosovar heroin labs] are protected and heroin transported by units of the US military.” (okay, not as much funny as absurd).
Lastly, temperatures have been in the upper 90s and occasionally up to 114 for a month or more. Next week temps - 74, 68, 64, 77. holla...do a dance...raise the roof.
