'tricity felicity

Although power outages are often inconvenient, sometimes I really love them. On Monday, my day off (and I didn't even get out of my jammies), I had a bit of stuff I wanted to do but no particular timeline. When the power went off mid-email, I simply turned off my computer and read for an hour. When the power went off the second time mid-google search, I made myself a cup of tea over the fire and cozied up with a candle and some stuff I needed to read for Wednesday. When the power went off yet again mid-movie that I was sort of into but didn't want to be into (How to Make an American Quilt is kind of depressing...), I happily cozied up with my book yet again. When the electricity came back on, I turned off the lights and the TV, and stayed cuddled up by the wood stove.

It's not all fuzzy - it was off for 4 hours and on for 2 yesterday...and was rather annoying, indeed. It's frustrating when I'm on a time schedule and don't have the luxury of waiting around for the electricity to come on in order to make/eat a hot meal. It's even more frustrating when it goes off while I'm making photocopies and the machine jams. It's also annoying to pay for electricity that is so unreliable. All the same, I can't help wondering if I'm going to miss this "inconvenience" when I go back to the States. I think I've learned through power outages to slow down, to not take myself so seriously, and to be productive in other ways. Maybe everyone should try it :)
