I opened the Center today (as is typical on Wednesdays) and photocopied "study sheets" (I'm more inclined to believe they're cheat sheets) 'til I was blue in the face. It's kind of a difficult thing for me - I can't prove they're cheat sheets (i know we were sometimes allowed to bring a 3x5 card to exams crammed with whatever we wanted), we're a business and not the moral police, and I should just learn how to push the button and not be suspicious. Yet this type of thing bugs the jeebers out of me - which could be why I all but flipped out when people weren't taking my "no cheating" threats seriously in a harmless spelling bee last week.
Anyhoo (or is it anywho, anyhooh, anyhu, anyhew...)
After going to the college across the street 5 (or more?) times to ask permission to use the garden for something, I finally was able to see the Man in Charge. I was a little grumpy, to be perfectly honest, that I had spent so much time going over, being told to come back in an hour, going back, and zilch...for a week. Meeting the Chief, however, was quite a lovely experience. He was kind, polite, asked me a lot of questions about my family, work, and interests. He also told me about his family, background, and interests...along with the inevitable condensed history of the Albanian people, alphabet, and many things in between. It was, however, a pleasant experience.
After drinking a juice, Turkish coffee, and a glass of water, I was finally able to ask my question: Can some of us from an English course eat hamburgers in your school's yard 2 or 3 days in 2 weeks. I was reminded again about how entirely inefficient some simple tasks are - yet how much richer the relationships are because of it. That said - I'm not sure it was entirely worth the effort to be able to eat burgers while feeling grass between our toes.
