to adjust or not to adjust...

Cheek-pinching is all the rage here (a bit of an exaggeration…). When Brenda first told me about it, I thought the concept was almost sweet if not downright endearing. But the first time a woman went after my unsuspecting face with her mighty paw, I found the experience to be relatively painful, shocking, and demeaning. I suppose I remember having my pudgy face pinched a little as a little kid (and not liking it too much then, either). Yet having a couple women jank my cheeks with the same force that they hack wood isn’t my favorite part of being here…and, while they seem to think it’s endearing, this 23-year-old woman of iron might “repay kindness for kindness.” (I’m a bit vindictive about this, huh…).

That said, this practice could be partly responsible for the glorious cheekbones Albanian women have. What I’m mistaking for cheekbones could, in all actuality, simply be pinch-induced swelling. Hm. I know I need to be more easy-going about this (and other unrelated adjusting issues), but I find myself having mental tirades about protecting my dignity and being stubborn to the end about this particular issue (and, of course, I know it's totally ridiculous to get so worked up about this! drat.).

Just be glad those are the only cheeks they're pinching.
